In any link building campaign, its not just about the quantity of links you get but more importantly the quality of the link. Many newcomers to SEO think, as long as its a one way link or has high page rank, then its a great link, but there are so many other elements to consider before judging whether a link is good for your site or not. In most cases search engines won’t even count some of the links because they’re plain spammy. Complete article on Eleven Things That Define What A Quality Link Is
Most people checking the backlinks to their sites have always wondered why Google is showing so few links when clearly there are hundreds or maybe thousands more on the world wide web. Google’s “link:” command hasn’t always been reliable but there is probably a very good reason why they haven’t invested much time and effort into this search function. When anyone starts off with internet marketing, it’s always difficult to think of what to sell or offer to visitors. You either don’t have the initial capital to manufacture the product, not enough knowledge or you simply don’t know what the heck to do. Even if you do have an idea, how would you handle the logistics, assuming its a hardcopy product. Ifs its software that people can download, do you know what people need? This is where affiliate marketing can be really handy. Sure you don’t get the full profits but many companies these days offer products where you receieve 50% of the commission (which really aint that bad). This will always be my first destination for getting 1 way links at the start of any new website. It’s not a major part of my search engine marketing strategies but it still has to be done. There are so many online directories now, many of them look somewhat spammy. It’s getting to the stage where you need to think, “do people even visit these directories to find resources?”. If its Yahoo directory, Dmoz or another big directory then yes, of course people might have a look, but besides the big ones, most directories seem fairly irrelevant. They’re still valuable one way links though, so get this part of the link building process out of the way and maybe go through directories again in a years time. This last algorithm update from Google has certainly raised a lot of flags with various websites. Their continual filtering of paid links, sold links, duplicate content and the other thousand rules they’re made up in an attempt to maintain “quality control”. They’re causing some real headaches for some legitimate webmasters out there even the best of them. There was a time where SEO’s could maybe take a few risks here and there, but now Google’s seriously cracking down on all sites and Matt Cutts has already warned everyone.
A recent post on Digital Point exposes a few more loop hole that even Google hasn’t ironed out and apparently its been kept secret for quite some time. I found an extremely interesting article on Proxy hacking, something even my blackhat mind wouldn’t of thought up. The article will explain everything thoroughly, but basically proxy sites are being indexed instead of the real sites. Poor Brad Fallon was a victim of these, someone I’ve looked up to and learnt a whole heap from.
I then came across another recent article through WebProNews, analysing whether Google is starting to ban major directories. Some have already been banned including:
-Aviva
-Alive
-Big Web Links
-ewebpages
-Directory Dump
-Elegant Directory
-Biz-Dir
Experts say don’t panic, its just Google dancing. But I’d be panicking if one of my sites got banned (and its happened before). How can you not panic? I’ve even seen one of my company sites banned (can’t mention which site but it was fairly big). So what can we all do about this? We have no choice but to follow all search engines guidelines, not just google. Reoptimize your site and submit it for reconsideration if you have been banned. Wait patiently cause it will take them forever to respond. I don’t know what the success rate is but this will be a lesson learnt for most webmasters. Its obviously bad if it has happened to you, but look at this on a positive note. The real focus for search engines is to provide the best qualified results according to what keywords are typed in. No one can be perfect, not even Google.
People at work walk pass me and wonder what the heck do I do all day? They think I’m either playing games, listening to music, or just surfing youtube having the time of my life (even though some of it might be partially true, I still do a fair bit of work). Actually do refine it a bit more , lets look at what I do part time, since most SEO gurus would of started at this point I’m guessing. Complete article on What Do Search Engine Optimizers Do in a Day
